Can we have sex when fasting?
FAN: My wife denies me sex when she’s fasting. Is she justified? Kindly advise.
ME: She is NOT justified. Fasting is spiritual warfare that must be operated within the bounds of the scriptures. From a biblical point of view, your partner has zero right to deny you sex. If she wants to fast sex, she needs to get your consent. Mutual consent is the only grounds for not having sex in marriage.
1 Corinthians 7:5 (NIV) – Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer.
Engaging in sexual intimacy with your spouse does not defile prayers and fasting. Culture makes many of us see sex as a dirty and sinful taboo. Couples may choose to fast sex and other pleasures in addition to food and devote themselves in prayers. But even then, there must be mutual consent.
